Methods to Enhance Gems

Some gems may look better than others….

Diamonds and other gems may be enhanced in a variety of ways to improve their appearance. Some of these techniques have been in common use and perfected over centuries. Generally, these enhancements are permanent and have been accepted by the international gem and jewellery trade.

Enhancements include:

Heat treatment is often used to intensify the colour of rubies and sapphires.
Applying oil often improves the clarity of emeralds.
Other enhancement methods include dyeing, laser drilling, irradiating, bleaching, filling coating, faceting and polishing.
